Lankan govt threatens legal action against Fonseka

Colombo, Dec 23 (PTI) Sri Lanka has threatened to take legal action against its former military chief Sarath Fonseka over his comments that troops had committed warcrimes against Tamil Tigers.
“We are looking into possibilities of legal action against Fonseka in accordance with the country’s constitution and law,” Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarsinghe said.

Yes, internally displaced, because his parents Joseph and Mary had to leave Nazareth and go to Bethlehem, their city of birth for enumeration. Joseph and Mary even though they were of royal descent did not have sufficient resources to book into a decent place or hotel for the arrival of the precious child. They were turned away from inns and hotels which were said to be full.

JVP breathes fire at India and America

The JVP yesterday accused President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa of taking far reaching decisions favourable to India and the US, respectively at the expense of Sri Lanka.
JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said that the Rajapaksas had caused irreparable damage to national interest by inviting foreign interference. Addressing the media at their party headquarters, Silva and Vijitha Herath, MP urged the people to defeat the SLFP-led UPFA administration.
Silva said that the Defence Secretary had jeopardised national security by entering into the Acquisition and Cross Servicing Agreement (ACSA) with the US, which would be detrimental to India’s security interests. He said that the pact had placed Sri Lanka on a collision course with New Delhi. He said that the Defence Secretary’s interests lay with the US owing to his US citizenship.

‘The Island’, reported on December 15: “Fonseka said, he had told a weekend newspaper that a journalist had told him that Gotabaya Rajapaksa had ordered Maj. Gen Shavindra Silva (then Brigadier) to kill the LTTE leaders who offered to surrender but, what he said had been misreported. Certain opposition politicians were trying to gain political mileage by making use of that erroneous report, he said. “I don’t believe that the journalist who wrote the story had any intention of slinging mud at me,” he said.”

Though there are nearly 20 Lakhs persons without identity cards, the registration of persons Dept. has decided to print temporary cards for them for the forthcoming Presidential elections. The CAFFE organization has pointed out that there is room to suspect there will be a fraud in respect of this issue fo cards.
According to the voters list of 2008, there are 1.955,312 voters without ID cards. Yet, the Elections Commissions Dept. has printed one million cards and the registration of persons Dept. 2.6 million cards. That is a total of 3.6 million cards.
